Spravato® for Depression: Finding Hope When Other Treatments Haven’t Helped
Living with depression can feel heavy and exhausting—especially if you’ve already tried different medications, therapy, or lifestyle changes without much relief. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. At Salado Creek Mental Health, we meet many people who feel stuck after trying “everything,” and we want you to know there are still options. One of those options is Spravato® (esketamine) nasal spray, an FDA-approved treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression.
What Exactly Is Spravato®?
Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray that contains esketamine, a medication related to ketamine. Unlike standard antidepressants, which mostly work on serotonin and norepinephrine, Spravato® targets a different system in the brain—the glutamate system. By working in this unique way, Spravato® may help “reset” brain pathways involved in mood and emotional balance.
It’s important to know that Spravato® is used alongside an oral antidepressant. It’s approved for adults with:
- Treatment-resistant depression (depression that hasn’t improved after trying other medications)
- Major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts or behaviors
How Does Treatment Work?
Spravato® isn’t something you pick up at the pharmacy and take at home. It’s given only in a certified treatment center—like ours—under medical supervision. Here’s what a typical session looks like:
- Self-administered nasal spray – You’ll use the spray yourself while a member of our care team stays with you.
- Observation period – Because Spravato® can cause short-term side effects (like dizziness or feeling drowsy), we’ll ask you to stay and relax in our clinic for about two hours.
- Treatment schedule – Most people start with two sessions per week for four weeks, then gradually taper down to weekly then every other week, depending on progress.
Why Choose Spravato®?
Many of our patients describe Spravato® as a turning point after years of frustration. Some key benefits include:
- Rapid relief – Some people feel improvement within hours to days, much faster than traditional antidepressants.
- A new option for resistant depression – If other medications haven’t worked, this may offer a different path forward.
- Safe and supervised – Every treatment is done in-office with trained professionals by your side.
- Low out of pocket cost: Most insurances will cover Spravato treatment.
Are There Side Effects?
As with any medication, there can be side effects. The most common include:
- Dizziness
- Feeling “detached” or dreamlike (dissociation)
- Nausea – we usually premedicate to avoid this
- Temporary increase in blood pressure
- Drowsiness or fatigue
These effects usually fade within the observation period, and our team is there to support you the entire time.
Could Spravato® Be Right for You?
If you’ve been living with depression that hasn’t improved with standard treatment, Spravato® may be worth exploring. At Salado Creek Mental Health, we take the time to review your history, symptoms, and treatment goals so we can guide you toward the best options for your care.
You don’t have to face depression alone. New treatments like Spravato® are bringing real hope to people who thought they had run out of options.

Genetic Testing
We offer in clinic or home genetic testing to help us determine to best medication choices for you. If you have tried and failed more than one oral antidepressant or antipsychotic and have wondered if you might have a genetic difference in how you metabolize medications, genetic testing is an option for you. We use a simple cotton swab in the mouth, that is sent in for testing. Results come back in about a week and can tell us if you have any differences in your genetic makeup of the enzymes that metabolize most medications.
It will also test for MTHFR genetic mutations which can cause changes in how we process L-methylfolate. Since L-methylfolate is the building block for neurotransmitters responsible for serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, MTHFR genetic changes can increase risks of depression, bipolar disorder ADHD and schizophrenia
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Testing
We offer online neurocognitive testing to help support a diagnosis of ADHD. These tests measure how we perform on 6 different clinical domains important in evaluating and determining a diagnosis of ADHD. This includes our Processing Speed, Executive Function, Complex Attention, Cognitive Flexibility, Working Memory and Sustained Attention. After you test we will review the report with you and provide you a hard copy of the report for your records.
